Notice of Public Hearings

The University Capital Improvement Trust Fund (CITF) Fee Committee will be holding public hearings on Monday, May 7, 2012 at BBC (WUC 157 at 12:30pm) and MMC (GC 243 at 3:00pm). The University Athletic Fee Committee will be holding public hearings on Tuesday, May 8, 2012 at BBC (WUC 157 at 12:30pm) and MMC (GC 243 at 3:00pm).

The objective of these meetings will be to give interested individuals an opportunity to hear arguments pertaining to the proposed increase to the CITF fee, used to fund student buildings, and the Athletic Fee. The amended fees will become effective in the Fall 2012 term. Students and other interested individuals are invited to attend these meetings.

The Farinas & Castro Administration Opens Applications

The SGC-MMC Student Body President and Vice President, Laura Farinas & Alex Castro, have opened applications for all positions in both the Executive and Judicial branches. The application is available online on the SGA website, under the “GET INVOLVED” tab, linked to “Open Positions.” [Click here to see the page] Applications close on May 8th, at 5pm.

Only FIU students, or those admitted to begin coursework at FIU during the summer or fall 2012 terms, are permitted to apply. Students must register or be registered to take no less than 6 credit hours during the fall 2012 term, and at least half of the courses taken must be held at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus. With the exception of the Judicial branch applicants, students applying must also be aware that they will be required to be available every Wednesday at 4pm to attend mandatory Executive Cabinet meetings.

After applying, students will be notified via email, a confirmation regarding the submission of their application. Applicants then must sign-up for an interview slot in the SGA office (GC 211), at the front desk. Interview slots are available for dates: May 3rd, 8th, 10th or 11th. Upon arriving to sign-up for interviews, applicants must present their completed Qualification Verification Form with respective signatures, therefore authorizing the Department of Campus Life to verify his/her grades and status with the Office of Student Conduct.

Students are highly encouraged to take the initiative in applying to become a part of the administration that vows to put students first, joining the current administration in their efforts to represent the student body in a more innovative and transparent way.

Grand Prix of Miami for First Generation Scholarship

Although the application period was extend, all mandatory meetings will still be held at the same time and dates.

The times are as follows:

9:00-10:00am in GC 314
12:00-1:00pm in GC 140
6:00-7:00pm in GC 314

Please note that if you can not attend any of the three available meetings, you must submit an excuse email to sga.elections@fiu.edu 24 hours in advance.

Where Worlds Unite – Diversity Week 2012

Diversity week is an opportunity to celebrate the countless cultures, backgrounds, views, and individuals that make Florida International University unique. Today’s contemporary challenges require a global approach. To that end, we invite you to join us for this year’s diversity week celebration, “FIU: Where Worlds Unite” to experience new perspectives and celebrate the spirit that makes our richly diverse FIU culture Worlds Ahead.

To kick-off Diversity week’s events and festivities, we invite you to join us for an enlightening “edutainment” event, Faces of America on Tuesday, March 6th at 11:00 a.m. in the GC ballrooms. Please help us plan accordingly for this performance by making a reservation here.

NY Times Lecture with Columnist Sam Sifton

This just in! FIU will be hosting Sam Sifton, New York Times Columnist, for a lecture on the 2012 Elections. The event is on Wednesday, March 21st, in GC 140 from 3-4pm. There will also be a reception afterwards in the GC Faculty Club from 4-6pm.

Workshops for Fellowships and Scholarships

Attention Golden Panthers! Do you have a GPA above a 3.0 and are looking to apply for Nationally competitive Scholarships and Fellowships? SGA is sponsoring FREE workshops to help mold you into a national Fellow or Scholar.

February 28th at 3pm- Introduction to the program and How to develop a strategy for National Fellowships and Scholarships.
March 20 at 3pm- Personal Statement Development & Resume basics.
April 10 at 3pm- How to help Faculty write a Letter of Reference.

What the Initiative seeks to do:

The Student Government Association seeks to benefit the development of student excellence, both academically and intrapersonally, and to ensure success, not only for qualified applicants, but also for the personal growth of individuals whose efforts and contributions benefit the entire Florida International University community.

Our program hopes to help students pursue opportunities for enrichment by providing information and support throughout the fellowship application process.

Through one-on-one mentoring and direct assistance for many nationally competitive fellowships, we want to help students to identify and achieve their academic, public service, creative, and leadership goals.

Bottom line: We want students to succeed and apply for national recognition.
