Born and raised in Miami, Florida, Octavio Mella is a member of the Class of 2012 at Florida International University, pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science, a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, and a certificate in Law, Ethics and Society.
Previous to obtaining his position with student government, Octavio served as an SGC-MMC Intern during the 2009-10 academic school year within the student government judicial branch under then Chief Justice Luis Robayo. Octavio credits this invaluable experience as the integral factor that prepared him to serve as a student government leader.
During the summer 2010 term, Octavio was appointed by Chief Justice Guerra and confirmed by the Senate to serve as Associate Justice. Associate Chief Justice Mella’s objective is “to ensure that the SGC-MMC Supreme Court realizes its full potential as a branch of student government. This is necessary to secure the rights of the students, to provide a system of checks and balances, and to ultimately allow student government to run more efficiently.” Associate Justice Mella’s additional objectives include “providing speedy and fair reviews and deliberations of all writs filed with the Court, as well as serving as a defender of the SGA Constitution and impartially seeking justice.”
