Born and raised in Miami, FL, Donovan Dawson is currently a senior at Florida International University pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science with a minor in Psychology; he is also pursuing an undergraduate certificate in National Security Studies through the Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy and Citizenship Studies.
Donovan has been involved in Student Government Association (SGA) for three years. In the 2009-2010 academic year, he joined the SGA Intern Program and shadowed several Student Government officials to obtain a better understanding of how SGA operated. Through the intern program Donovan was motivated by what he learned and wanted to make a difference on campus, and in the 2010-2011 academic year he ran for the SGA Senate and was elected as a Senator for the College of Arts and Sciences. During his first term, Senator Dawson served as the Vice-Chairman of the Operational Review Committee. After serving one term, Senator Dawson decided to seek reelection and was successful in that venture.
In May 2011, Senator Dawson was unanimously chosen to be Speaker of the Senate for the 2011-2012 academic year. Among Speaker Dawson’s goals for the new year include increasing the exposure of the Student Government Senate, advocate and advertise for the Student Research Initiative through Career Services, and continue to make sure that the SGA Senate is a megaphone for student issues on campus.
