Speaker Pro Tempore

Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and raised in Henderson, Kentucky, Samir Patel is a member of the Class of 2011 at the Florida International University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Sports and Fitness. Along with his primary academic field of study, Samir is also pursuing a minor in Psychology.

Samir began in student government as the Senator for the College of Education for the 2010 – 2011 Academic School Year. He served as the Student Advocacy Committee Vice Chair.  In the spring of 2011, Samir was elected by the Student Body to serve as Senator At-Large. Senator Patel’s previous background as SAC Vice Chair affords him the experience necessary to address the concerns of students at various academic levels as Senator At-Large at the Modesto A. Maidique Campus.

During the summer of 2011, members of the Senate voted, making Samir the Speaker Pro Tempore of the Senate. Speaker Pro Tempore Patel is responsible for not only the Senate, but also the entire Student Body. Speaker Pro Tempore Patel is also a member of the University Wide Council, a collection of student leaders from both MMC and BBC campuses that appropriates the student activities budget before the start of each academic year. Senator Patel maintains that he will work tirelessly with other members of the student government community to improve student engagement, involve students with legislative matters in the University and the State, increase student safety, increase green initiatives, and give the disregarded students a voice, all of which Senator Patel believes is possible through increased communication and unity between SGA and the Student Body.
