In these difficult economic times, the affordability of higher education is critical. For students who are the first in their family to seek higher education, it can be even more difficult. This is why the Student Government Association of Florida International University joined forces with the FIU Office of Annual Giving and Donor Relations to raise funds for these students.

“I wanted to make a difference in our students’ lives,” said Myka Figueiredo the 2009-2010 Vice President of SGA at the FIU Modesto Maidique Campus. “We wanted to alleviate some of the pressures that our institution has during this critical budget shortage by helping FIU reach its fundraising goal for first generation scholarships.”

Since the inception of this program, the FIU Student Government Association, the FIU Office of Annual Giving and Donor Relations,  and with the help of the Florida’s First Generation Matching Grant Program, the First Generation Scholarship Grant has raised well over $250,000.

On June 13th, 2011, The Miami Bayside Foundation awarded Florida International University over $200,000 (that’s $353,000 with State Match!!!), of which, the First Generation Scholarship fund is set to receive $100,000.

“What we see is that this scholarship program is a partnership between the entire community, the legislature, the public and private sectors, and large and small donors,” said Representative Anitere Flores who has been a longtime supporter of the scholarship program. “This program is working, it’s going directly to the students, and it’s good to know it is not on the chopping block.”

100 percent of the funds raised during the First Generation Scholarship reception will go to First Generation Scholarships, and none of the funds raised to administrative fees.
